Year 10 present to the MP Theresa Pearce and Principal Patrick Winston on the regeneration of Thamesmead

Year 10 students experienced a Citizens UK workshop last term with Alberto Galindo to prepare for the panel of judges who would critique their presentations. The students on Monday 25th April presented on integrating ideas for the regeneration and sustainability of the Thamesmead area to Mr Winston (Principal), Mrs Bryan (Head of Year 10), Froli Legaspi (a Citizens UK representative), Alberto Galindo (Ravenborne lecturer), Mr Davis (Head of Geography) and Greenwich’s MP Theresa Pearce.

Mrs Cooper’s class present to the panel of judges (MP Theresa Pearce, Alberto Glaindo, Froli Legaspi, Patrick Winston, Mrs Bryan and Mr Davis).

The teams were divided into classes and asked to speak about the following topics:
·         Ms Gaffney’s class: Creating a new commercial economy in Abbey Wood – Shopping districts.
·         Mr Davis’ class: Sustainable estates.
·         Mr O’Nullain’s class: Sustainable and affordable intergenerational communities.
·         Mrs Cooper’s class: Sustainable communal spaces in Southmere Lake.
The students were incredible assets – both to the Geography department and school community – with each presentation demonstrating a depth and breadth of research into regeneration for Thamesmead.
Mr Davis’ class present to the panel of judges on sustainable estates.
The students should be commended for the innovation of their ideas, which saw the development of Thamesmead incorporate green gyms, renewable energy sources, mobile technology and the development of sustainable shopping facilities.

Mr O’Nullain’s class present to the panel of judges on sustainable and affordable intergenerational communities.

The judges were complementary of all the groups participating and found deciding the winners a challenging task. The panel deliberated the following criteria to decide a winner:
o   Quality of verbal presentation (out of 10)
o   Quality of visual presentation (out of 10)
o   How radical are the presented ideas? (out of 10)
o   How achievable are the presented ideas? (out of 10)
Ms Gaffney’s class presented on creating new commercial economies in Abbey Wood – Shopping districts.
The decision posed to be a hard one. The difference between the four teams was a mere 4 points. However, there had to be one winner and by unanimous decision the winners for their innovative and thought-provoking presentation on Sustainable communal spaces in Southmere Lake goes to Mrs Cooper’s class. Congratulations on winning a trip to Go Ape at the end of the summer term. Credit needs to go to the other teams for a valiant effort.
